What is Vision Therapy?

Glasses, contact lenses, and modern laser surgery make it possible for most of us to see 20/20. But there is more to good vision that just seeing well. Many problems cannot be corrected with glasses and require treatment with vision therapy (orthoptics).

Vision therapy is the art and science of developing visual skills to optimize vision, performance and comfort. These programs are designed to improve vision in a lazy eye (amblyopia), get the eyes working together in strabismus, make the eyes work more efficiently to reduce eye strain, and/or improve school performance by eliminating vision-related problems.

Our vision therapy programs use the latest computerized equipment to improve eye tracking, focusing, teaming and perceptual skills. As a matter of fact, many of the computerized techniques were designed by Dr. Cooper. Our well-trained therapists implement an individually designed program to improve your or your child’s quality of life. Our programs generally consist of in-office therapy once a week supplemented with home therapy. When therapy is completed, the benefits should last a lifetime (see Testimonials for patient comments).

Many ask the question if vision therapy improves eye-hand coordination, what is the effect of video games? Learn what researches say about video games.

Clearly, the most effective vision therapy programs are individualized for the patient, using the guidance of our therapists in combination with specialized equipment. Obviously this is not available for use at home. Managed care and time constraints have forced us to deal with the reality that in-office therapy is not practical for everyone. Therefore, we have developed an automated home therapy system HTS which can effectively remediate common, simple eye muscle problems.

By the way, patients of all ages may benefit from vision therapy. The American Optometric Association has produced a detailed Clinical Guidelines with description of most accommodative (focusing) and binocular problems. This Guideline reviews definition,
